Slider Studio, Azhar Architecture and Grant Westfield will develop a more dignified toileting and washing experience in hospitals.

Slider Studio is working on designs to improve washrooms and toilets in existing hospitals in order to improve patient dignity and support productivity in wards. Working in collaboration with Azhar Architecture and manufacturer Grant Westfield our team has visited five different hospitals and studied typical design and operational problems in these areas. We have talked to patients and nurses about possible improvements, and will apply user-centred and democratic design thinking to devise appropriate environments fit for all users.

The project is sponsored by the Design Council and Department of Health. To learn more about the Design for Dignity Programme visit the Design Council website.

Enabled Self Procurement tested at large urban extension scale.

Over the last six years, we have developed innovative housing ideas, using democratic design thinking, computational methodologies and techniques to develop the design. Europan 10 offered us an opportunity to tackle an urban extension site near Aarhus and Denmark, and to test our our enabled self procurement ideas (see esp-sim.org). Our team investigated an enabled construction process using prefebricated components assembled by the community working as a collaborative team along with professionals. The ultimate goal - to build a sustainable community that endures way after all construction has completed – is then achieved by effective engagement with early adopter community members at the design stage, using web 2.0 technologies and online virtual environments to visualise design outcomes, but continuously growing the community before during and after construction.

The homes we envisaged for the competition were to be designed through identification of common goals, and consensus as to the appropriate distribution of privately owned and shared space. All dwellings are gathered around a semi-public space shared between 3-4 house holds; private outdoor space is provided on top of roofs and public private terraces looked out onto the shared public realm. All the proposed dwellings are designed to passivhaus standards, flexible and extendable so that inhabitants can develop their homes over an extended period of time following a pattern book of extension options and ensuring the high performance construction is maintained.

We have finished another 3D web model for showing and comparing urban design options online. Our 3D web technology offers a lighter alternative to the more sophisticated YouCanPlan3D gaming engine, and it runs directly in your browser with no independent download and installation requirement.

Visit www.sliderstudio.co.uk/3dweb/urbandesign to see three urban design options. You can orbit, zoom in and pan the model, take a guided tour, compare models, and vote for your favourite design . The designs shown are representative of the urban design options prepared by Birmingham City Council Housing department for regneration in Lozells.

We will be developing new features and demos in due course. Please contact Renee Puusepp if you would like to discuss how this technology can help your projects.
