On the evening of 26 November 2007, we launched ‘YouCanPlan Pattern Books’, an online competition to design adaptable housing types for volume housebuilding. We asked the architectural community to provide us with customisable house types that would offer consumer choice at point of sale. We put up £15000 pounds prize money from the ESP-sim project, and would build the 10 most popular designs, found by online voting, into the simulation of enabled self procurement. The competition was approved by RIBA competitions office. Several Months later we had received 38 entries and had attracted 750 visitors to the gallery to view the designs. By final count, 539 people had voted for their 10 favorite designs which were then developed further and integrated into the YouCanPlan simulation of Enabled Self Procurement.
